Armed Forces Week Charities Part 2

 

Hello all!

 

I hope that you enjoyed the 2nd installment of the United States Military Service Branches, featuring the US Navy an the US Coast Guard. I hope that you learned something you that didn’t know!

I apologize for the delay of postings this week, recently had some work and home life situations throw me some sneak attacks, but it’s all good now! This post (as I’m catching up on 3 final posts for this Armed Forces Week) features 2 more military charities and organizations that do the military proud.

I came across Soldier’s Angels only fairly recently, but they have been doing great work since 2003. I absolutely love their mission statement and it completely captures the essence of Soldier’s Angels:

“May no soldier go unloved † May no soldier walk alone † May no soldier be forgotten † Until they all come home™”

 

I know?!
Powerful right? So is Soldier’s Angels.

 

Since its conception in 2003, becoming a 501(c)(3) non profit organization in 2004, it has (as of currently) immensely helped 734,844 active  Marine, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force members, veterans and their families. We’re talking 1.4 MILLION cards and letters have been written and sent out and 780,000 care packages have been lovingly made and sent to our troops.

 

On top of those positively FANTASTIC numbers, their programs are diversified for everyone. They cover Veteran Support, Deployed Support, Wounded Support, Family Support and Other support. At the time of this posting, there are 218 soldiers waiting to be adopted.

Is that a big number to you or is that a drop in the bucket?

 

What if I told you that 22 was the national AVERAGE, the average PER DAY that our active service and veterans are committing suicide?

 

22 seems like a heck of a lot more doesn’t it? It’s estimated that 8,035 veterans take their own lives annually. That number is absolutely horrifying.

 

That’s where Active Heroes comes in!

 

As their mission states: “To support U.S. military service members, veterans and their families through physical, educational, and emotional programs providing coping skills in an effort to eliminate suicide…Active Heroes’ vision is to eliminate military/veteran suicide.”

 

Along with their advocate programs of free programs, classes and seminars as well as home repairs and scholarships, they have built (and are continuing to expand) a welcome center and military-friendly retreat/nature park located in Shepherdsville, KY, just 35 minutes from Louisville or Fort Knox. What’s best is that this place is FREE to military personnel and only $22 for a day pass for the general public. They are building their first cabin and are currently 29% completed of the $70,000 goal mark.

 

Active Heroes also promotes national (and FREE) events, some available for you to host yourself! Some of these events include: Carry the Fallen, Virtual WOD, Pound Challenge, Stand at Attention Competition, Golf Tournament, Run for Active Heroes and Obstacle Course Races.
